Equipment

First of all, let me display to you what you need for this practice. Just arrange these things on your table.

  • A screwdriver
  • Mineral spirit
  • A razor blade
  • Warm linseed oil
  • Steel wool
  • Paste wax
  • Old paper and
  • Rags

Now, come to the next step. Here I’m gonna show you the process of effortlessly cleaning heavy rust from a saw blade.

How to clean a hand saw blade with heavy rust?

Restoration saw by a simple method1. Maintenance safety

Safety is fast. When you are thinking about a clean hand saw blade, you need to maintain its security. Overall, this is messy work. The mineral spirit and warm linseed oil may irritate or burn your skin. The blade itself may hurt you.

So, be careful in cleaning your saw. Please use hand gloves and a mask when working.

2. Remove the handle

Take a screwdriver and remove the screws present on your saw. Select a screwdriver that fits perfectly with the screw. Keep them in a safe space. Pull off the handle.

Take some drops of warmed linseed oil on a piece of rag. Clean the handle from both sides with this rag. After coating perfectly, let it dry for about an hour.

When it’s time to set with the saw blade, just take a dry piece of rag and remove the extra oil from the handle.  You can use a used towel and make two small pieces from it.

3. Utilize Used Newspapers

Used papers are ideal for securing your worktable. It likewise simply cleans the rust buildup from your scratching and sanding. After scratching, you just fold the paper and cast the piece in a dustbin.

4. Scrape the blade

Utilizing a plate scraper is most perfect for removing surface rust from the blade. Hold the scrubber at low points, conduct short strokes in the edge from one to another. Continue scraping until you dispel the expected rust. Erase the rust that builds up after every scratching.

5. Use the mineral spirit

When you complete scratching, it appears as a rust and dirt-free blade. Apply some drops of mineral spirits to the cutting edge. I like to utilize my old hot sauce bottle. It permits the perfect measure of mineral spirits to apply.

Note, mineral spirits are combustible and related to neurological harm. It’s better to do this outside. Wear a respirator intended to eliminate natural solvents from breathing air.

6. Clean with sandpaper

Take some sandpaper and rub your blade with it. It’s good to utilize some mineral spirits as an ointment. Focus on strokes that are corresponding with the length of the edge. You are simply attempting to eliminate the free rust left by the scratching.

You should not rub much to get a more bright blade. It’s not possible to bring back the same shine as it was at the time of purchase. You are simply attempting to eliminate the rust, so it doesn’t stain your job when you utilize the saw.

7. Use Paint Thinner

When you complete all the sanding, scratching, flush it down with some paint thinner. Then let the blade dry for four hours at least.

8. Lubricate the blade

If you would not prefer to use paint thinner, you can use mineral spirit to lubricate the blade. Apply a flimsy covering of the mineral spirits on each side utilizing a perfect, dry fabric and start polishing. Continue this process for a few minutes.

9. Apply paste wax

Now, look at your saw blade. You will observe the presence of fine haze on the blade surface. This is buildup from rust particles and the use of mineral spirit. Remove it with the help of a rag.

Now, you have to apply a layer of paste wax with a bit of cloth. Apply a decent coat on each side. Let it dry for around 10 minutes. This will secure your blade from further rusting. It also experiences you with a better smooth cut.
